Whether you need to fast depends on the glucose test being offered. Instead of following someone else’s appointment experience, begin with written preparation instructions from your own clinic.

## Ask for the exact test name

Testing may be offered even without symptoms. NIDDK distinguishes a glucose screening test that does not require fasting from an oral glucose tolerance test that does. Ask which test is planned and why; do not infer its type from the appointment time.

## Confirm preparation with the clinic

Ask when any fasting should start, whether water is allowed and what to do about your medicines. Do not change your diet to try to pass the test. Get individual instructions rather than skipping medicines or supplements yourself.

## Make room for the waiting time

Some tests involve timed blood samples after a glucose drink. Confirm the total visit length, what you may do while waiting and whom to tell if you feel unwell. Use that information to arrange transport and any childcare.

## Give the result a next step

Before leaving, ask how you will receive the result and who will explain it. Do not diagnose yourself by comparing one number with thresholds for a different test. Keep space for a follow-up date and contact details if review is needed.
