Back pain is common in pregnancy, but you do not need to explain every new pain yourself. Reducing everyday strain and getting new or severe symptoms assessed are two separate parts of a useful plan.

## Break tasks into smaller parts

Ask for help or reduce the load instead of carrying a heavy bag in one trip. Bend your knees and keep your back straight when picking something up; turn with your feet rather than twisting. Do not push through a task that makes pain worse.

## Review the place you sit

Arrange support for your back and make space to rest. Put frequently used items within easy reach at your desk. Ask your maternity team about suitable exercise or physiotherapy; this guide is not an individual exercise prescription.

## Do not delay these symptoms

NHS guidance advises urgent maternity contact for back pain in the second or third trimester because it can indicate early labour. Fever, vaginal bleeding, painful urination or pain in your side under the ribs also need prompt advice. Loss of sensation in your legs, bottom or genitals requires emergency help.

## Make the conversation specific

Note when it began, where it is and which tasks change it. “It became worse while carrying a bag” gives more context than “my back is bad”. A completed diary is not a condition for seeking care.
