Heartburn can occur during pregnancy. Smaller meals and staying upright after eating may help. Persistent, severe or unusual symptoms deserve advice from your care team rather than being automatically labelled as heartburn.

## Observe rather than building a restrictive menu

Instead of marking a whole meal as “good” or “bad”, note what you ate, roughly when and when discomfort began. One day does not establish a cause. Bring recurring examples to an appointment rather than removing every food you enjoy on your own.

## Leave some space in the evening

NHS guidance includes trying not to eat within three hours of bedtime and avoiding lying down straight after a meal. If your routine makes this difficult, explain your work hours, commute and meal options to your care team.

## Bring three questions to the conversation

Write down: “Does this need assessment?”, “Which options are suitable for me during pregnancy?” and “What change should make me contact you again?” Bring the names of products you use. Do not start, stop or adjust medicines or supplements independently.

## When should you seek help promptly?

Tell your team about difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss or symptoms that persist. Seek urgent assessment for severe headache, visual changes or pain below the ribs during pregnancy; do not wait to complete a food diary.
