The first bath does not need to establish a perfect routine. Preparation is about avoiding a search for towels or nappies once your baby is in the water. A short rehearsal without the baby can show where you need each item.

## Do a dry run first

Place towels, a clean nappy, clothes and washing essentials where you can reach them safely. Prepare the room and think ahead about a ringing phone or doorbell.

If another adult is present, agree roles explicitly: one holds the baby while the other brings an item. Do not assume the other person has taken over supervision without a clear handover.

## Mix and check the water

NHS advice is to check the water before putting a baby in and mix it well to remove hot patches. It should not feel too hot or cold when checked with your elbow.

Even with water ready, confirm that the towel is in place before bringing your baby. If something is missing, pause preparation before the bath rather than searching once your baby is in it.

## No product takes over supervision

Support your baby’s head and shoulders, keep the head clear of the water and never leave a baby alone in the bath, even briefly. NHS makes uninterrupted supervision a central safety rule.

If you must step away, take your baby safely with you. A bathing aid does not replace an adult, and a timer or tracking screen cannot supervise a child.

## A daily bath is not essential

NHS guidance says newborns do not need a bath every day and plain water is suitable in the first month. Ask your baby’s care team about individual skin concerns or special instructions.

If a bath feels difficult today, provide appropriate everyday cleaning and choose another time. Afterwards, dry gently, including skin folds, and leave tidying equipment as a separate task.
