Brushing begins when the first baby tooth appears; you do not need to wait for a full set. An adult does the cleaning at first. A small, repeatable setup makes it less dependent on whether your baby feels interested that day.

## Let an adult prepare the supplies

Choose a small, soft-bristled brush. ADA guidance recommends a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste for young children. Ask your dentist about the right product and use, and keep the cap and tube out of your baby’s independent reach.

## Make space for two daily sessions

Clean the teeth twice daily, including last thing at night. Choose a position where you can see the teeth and support your baby safely. A song may make preparation easier; handing over the brush and leaving the baby alone is not a substitute for cleaning.

## Plan the first visit early

ADA recommends a first dental visit after teeth appear and no later than the first birthday. Bring the brush and product and ask for a demonstration. Contact a dentist sooner for pain, swelling or other dental concerns.

## Share the routine with other caregivers

Leave a brief note about the brush, toothpaste amount and who will help in the evening. Return to the routine after a missed session rather than turning it into blame. The aim is consistent care, not a guaranteed dental outcome.
