At a glance
As your baby becomes mobile, something out of reach yesterday may be accessible today. A safety walkthrough before the first crawl helps you spot small changes that matter around the home.
Start at floor level
Remove coins, buttons, batteries and small parts from older children’s toys. Store batteries securely rather than simply putting them on a higher shelf. Include bags, visitors’ belongings and the space under furniture in the places you check.
Think beyond crawling to climbing
CPSC recommends properly securing furniture and televisions against tip-overs. Review low furniture beside windows. Install safety gates and similar products in suitable locations according to their instructions; equipment does not replace supervision.
Move cords and hot drinks
Move blind cords, charging leads and dangling appliance cables out of reach. Keep hot drinks away from accessible edges and avoid carrying one while holding your baby. Store cleaning products and medicines securely; child-resistant packaging is not child-proof.
Finish a room, then revisit it
Use three headings for each room: remove now, get help securing, and check again. Repeat the walkthrough after moving furniture or having visitors. The aim is to notice changing access, not to certify a home as permanently risk-free.
