At a glance

The cord stump does not need a shelf full of care products. Keeping it clean and dry is the basic approach. Follow the discharge plan if your baby was premature or your team has given individual care instructions.

Keep supplies simple

Wash your hands before care or a nappy change. If urine or stool soils the area, clean gently with water and dry it. NHS and AAP resources emphasise dry care; do not add alcohol, powder or cream on your own.

Keep the nappy below the stump

Keep the edge of the nappy below the stump so it does not cover or rub it. Do not pull it off; let it separate naturally. A brief look during a nappy change is enough without repeatedly handling it.

Report these changes

Contact the healthcare team promptly about spreading redness, foul-smelling discharge or active or persistent bleeding. Fever, marked lethargy or poor feeding also need prompt assessment. If a photograph is requested, use the secure route your team recommends.

Use one sentence at handover

A short handover can say: “We cleaned it today, noticed this change and contacted the team.” Share the observation and instructions received rather than assuming someone else has checked. The note does not replace an examination.
